A perky breast is a youthful looking breast. Unfortunately, childbirth, gravity over time and weight gain/loss will stretch out the skin and tissues of the breasts, causing them to sag or droop. A great bra can certainly help lift them back to their former glory, but many women want to feel good without one as well. A breast lift is a surgical procedure to re-contour and lift the skin and tissues of the breast so that the nipple is restored to a higher point on the chest wall. The result is a younger, rejuvenated breast.
Dr. Robert Whitfield has been successfully performing breast lifts for over 20 years. The breast lift procedure, also know as mastopexy, can be technically challenging and requires someone with surgical skill. When it comes to the scars required for all breast lift results, experience matters. Dr. Whitfield’s skill and training allow him to design and deliver the improved cosmetic appearance patients seek while minimizing scars.
While a breast lift can be performed alone, Dr. Whitfield will often combine it with a breast implant for those patients who need a bit more volume, or as part of a mommy makeover procedure.
During your breast lift consultation, Dr. Whitfield will assess your breast tissue, skin laxity, nipple position in relation to the inframammary fold, and your desired outcome. His goal is to give you the best breast for your body with the least amount of scarring. There are a few differing incision placements that will be decided based on your unique situation. The incision decision will decide the kind of scar you will have, and will be one of these 3:
The most common breast lift incision placement that Dr. Whitfield performs is the periareolar incision, placed around the nipple. He prefers this approach because it helps conceal the scar and leaves the visual appearance of the breast undisturbed.
Patients who require more of a lift to the upper pole of the breast, a lollipop incision is made with a vertical scar going from the areola to the fold of the breast.
Patients with a large degree of excess skin that needs to be removed, Dr. Whitfield will use an anchor incision that adds a scar underneath the fold of the breast.
For many, a breast lift alone is enough to restore the breasts. In some cases, the breasts may have lost considerable volume with time, as well as dropped. Some patients also just wants to be larger! In these cases, Dr. Whitfield will combine a breast lift with a breast augmentation. The procedure involves placing temporary sizers to establish your perfect breast volume and then tailoring the lift to your individual needs. This may mean using two different size implants to balance your breasts from one side to the other. All of this will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation.
In cases where Dr. Whitfield only removes excess skin, the recovery from a breast lift is pretty quick: 1-2 weeks. If he has had to remove considerable breast tissue and/or add an implant then your recovery will be longer, anywhere from 2-6 weeks.
Dr. Whitfield will recommend a bra during your recovery, as well as certain types of scar therapy based on your procedure. Most women find the scar heals surprisingly well on the breasts.
