Let’s be honest, pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s body. This is especially true for women who’ve had multiple children and/or twins. Often after pregnancy, the rectus muscles in the abdomen don’t return to their normal position, a problem diet and exercise cannot fix. Furthermore, the skin has been stretched and the breasts have lost volume and “perkiness” thanks to breast feeding. The result is a torso that is sometimes unrecognizable, or a mom in need for a mommy makeover.
A mommy makeover is a blanket term to describe a combination of procedures to re-contour the body. While it typically includes a tummy tuck and breast surgery, Dr. Robert Whitfield always approaches each patient from a 360˚ viewpoint.
During your initial mommy makeover consultation, Dr. Whitfield will perform a full physical exam. He will assess:
Additionally, he will listen to your goals and discuss your lifestyle. Together, you will come up with the best combination of procedures to deliver your desired outcome.
Most women who have had children are going to require a tummy tuck as part of their mommy makeover. It is the only way to repair stretched muscles and remove excess skin and fat over the entire abdomen, delivering the smooth, flat stomach of your pre-pregnancy days. In the hands of an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Whitfield, your scar will be placed low and easily hidden.
The right breast surgery is going to depend on your individual needs. Most women who have breast fed multiple children are probably going to require a breast lift. Again, the only way to correct loose, sagging skin is with a surgical excision. If you have also lost volume then Dr. Whitfield may suggest the addition of a breast implant to restore upper pole fullness. Some women may even need to reduce volume with a breast reduction. For others whose skin elasticity is still strong, a breast augmentation alone may be the answer.
A mommy makeover may also include liposuction to the flanks and/or back to smooth out the contours of your torso. Dr. Whitfield often recommends fat transfer to further improve the look of your breasts or to increase volume in your buttocks.
Recovery will depend on the procedures decided for you mommy makeover, as well as whether or not Dr. Whitfield performs a rectus plication on your abdominal muscles. The placation will improve the protrusion of the lower abdomen that often exists after a pregnancy or multiple pregnancies. The abdomen will feel tighter over the first few months after the procedure is performed.
Most breast and abdominal procedures can be safely combined. Whether or not this is safe and right for you will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation.
A mommy makeover is typically done under general anesthesia in an accredited surgery center and may or may not require an overnight stay. Although swelling following breast surgery may take anywhere from 3-6 months to fully resolve, most patients will notice a marked improvement by 6 weeks and should be able to return to normal activities by 2 weeks.
In cases where he feels it appropriate, Dr. Whitfield performs what is called a drainless tummy tuck. In this procedure a tissue glue can be used to help eliminate the need for a drain. The long-lasting analgesic Exparel is used during surgery to prevent discomfort for up to three days, helping to speed recovery.
