Fat does not have to be the enemy! In fact, fat can be your friend. Fat transfer, or fat grafting, is a procedure where excess fat is removed from an unwanted area and replaced somewhere else that could use the volume.
As previously thought, sagging skin is not simply the result of gravity, it is also about a loss of volume. Anyone who was accused of having a round face when they were younger gets the last laugh when they hit middle age. If you look at an old picture, you looked younger partly because you had more fat in the right places. Dr. Robert Whitfield uses fat transfer to strategically restore this lost volume. The result is a more youthful, completely natural look to your face, breast or body.
During your fat grafting procedure, Dr. Whitfield will liposuction fat from an area where you have too much, using the best method for your individual needs. The most common areas for fat harvesting are the abdomen, and the inner and outer thighs.
For small amounts of fat, the harvesting can be done under local anesthesia in the office. For larger amounts, the patient will need to go under general anesthesia at an accredited surgery center.
Once the fat is harvested, it is processed and prepared for re-injection. Dr. Whitfield will artfully inject your fat into the desired areas. Possible placement spots include the breasts, face, and even the backs of the hands.
There are two main advantages to fat transfer over facial fillers. Since the fat is actually from your own body (autologous), you are not using a foreign substance. This reduces the risk of any kind of potential reaction, such as an allergy. The other advantage is the results will be long-lasting once the swelling has resolved and the tissues have healed.
The downside of a fat transfer is that is can be more expensive and time-consuming. Procedures such as a breast enhancement you may require multiple sessions before you achieve your desired look.
During your fat transfer consultation, Dr. Whitfield will discuss the pros and cons of fat transfer as it pertains to your unique anatomy and needs. He will often use fat alone or in conjunction with a facelift or a breast augmentation.
Fat grafting is recycling at its best. The technique is one of the most exciting areas of innovation in plastic surgery today because of its versatility. Dr. Whitfield uses fat on the breast, hands, face and body.
Fat transfer to the face can be used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, restore volume to the mid-face/cheeks, fill in dark hollows under the eye, eliminate a sunken appearance around the temples, and plump up the lips.
Carefully placed fat can rejuvenate the look of the hands by covering up prominent tendons and veins, restoring a more youthful look. Fat transfer is also thought to improve the quality of the skin on the hands over time.
In the right patient, a breast augmentation with fat grafting alone may be possible. In general, Dr. Whitfield uses fat transfer on his breast augmentation and breast reconstruction patients to enhance the appearance of a breast implant by smoothing out any irregularities and/or improve contour in the upper pole.
One of the hottest procedures these days is a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) or buttock augmentation. Fat transfer to the buttocks can increase volume, restore volume that has been lost with age, and change the shape and contour of your butt.
For most fat transfer procedures, only small amounts of fat are removed with liposuction under local anesthesia. Since multiple areas may be treated, you can expect to be sore and bruised, but you shouldn’t experience any significant downtime.
In cases where larger amounts of fat are necessary, liposuction will be performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgery center. Recovery in these cases will take a bit longer, typically 1-2 weeks. You may also need to wear a compression garment. All of this will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation.
Costs are going to vary depending on the treatment area. If large amounts of fat need to be harvested or multiple areas are to be treated at once, this will increase the price.
